A Feng Shui Bedroom

In a demanding world with constant distractions and overstimulation, the quest for calm and tranquillity in our everyday lives has become a sought-after luxury.

With so many external factors, out of our control, it’s often within the sanctity of our homes that we seek and find the calmness we desire.

Holistic interior design, for example, takes into account your entire well-being, focusing on wholesome organic materials, natural light and furniture arrangement to promote balance and harmony.

The same principles are a philosophy deeply rooted in the timeless wisdom of feng shui.

It's believed that by following these principles, you’ll create a positive impact on your health and well-being, helping to reduce stress, increase wellness and promote better sleep.

At Miri Design, our passion for feng shui runs deep. We’re firm believers in its power to transform interior design and, in turn, our lives.

In today's article, we’re exploring our unique perspective on incorporating feng shui principles into your home's most personal sanctuary — your bedroom.

If you’ve ever felt a disconnect with your home or a feeling that something was “off”, feng shui could be just the cure you need.

Feng Shui Bedroom Layout

Your bed placement holds the key to a peaceful night's sleep and takes precedence over all else…. with particular emphasis on situating your bed in the command position.

The command position sets the tone for the rest of your space and relates to the placement of your bed in a way that allows for optimum energy flow.

You never want to obstruct the path of chi — the life-giving energy that flows from hallways and doors through to the window as it's thought to generate negative energy within your space.

Floor-to-ceiling screens, crafted from timber are a perfect way to gently diffuse this energy and encourage it to flow smoothly around the room, rather than rush through it. Beyond their functional role, they’re an elegant and sophisticated statement, bringing a warm, organic feel that nurtures rest and relaxation.

Positive Energy Placement -  Feng Shui Bedroom

In an era when we’re incessantly surrounded by digital screens emitting blue light, and oversized televisions infringing upon the sanctity of our bedrooms, the importance of positive energy placement cannot be overstated.

Think of your bedroom as a peaceful hideaway.

A private cocoon, where you can effortlessly unwind in the quiet comfort of your safe and personal space.

Certain objects such as televisions and mirrors, with their intrusive nature, can be overly stimulating and disrupt the harmonious flow of energy within a room so pay attention to any corners and sharp edges, especially those directed toward your bed.

In feng shui, these ‘sharp arrows’ are seen as 'sha chi' or attacking energy.

To lighten their impact and promote a soothing environment, consider softening these elements with elegant plants or a chic decorative screen. This tactful arrangement allows the 'chi' to flow smoothly,  inviting a sense of calm and balance to run through every corner of your room.

Feng Shui Bedroom Colour

The psychology and influence of colour play a key role in a feng shui bedroom. Every shade weaves its own narrative and invokes distinct emotions and energy levels, from exhilarating vibrant shades to soothing, relaxing tones.

In the high-stress and high-energy lives, most of us live in, it's a good idea to lean towards yin colours — colours that inspire calm, comfort and relaxation for the ultimate zen state of mind.

The natural, earthy undertones of brown, are often compared to the sturdy trunk of a tree, symbolising stability, strength, and dependability. Incorporate into your bedroom furniture for a sense of groundedness to your space, creating a cosy atmosphere that encourages you to relax and unwind.

Green is a color that holds a special place in feng shui. It’s often associated with nature and represents renewal and harmony. And because it falls in the middle of the color spectrum, the human eye requires little adjustment to perceive it which makes it restful.

The addition of vibrant green plants echoes this restorative power of nature and is a great way to infuse your space with nature's sense of vitality and calm.

Feng Shui Bedroom Lighting

Forgoing the use of harsh spotlights is crucial in crafting a space that encourages relaxation.

Overhead lights tend to increase stress, often subconsciously triggering a state of tension.

Instead, we suggest opting for subtle, low-level lighting with dimmers, that illuminate your space in a soft, gentle glow. With careful placement, lighting can transform your bedroom into a soothing refuge of intimacy and privacy — the quintessential characteristics of a bedroom.

Returning to two of the key principles of feng shui — symmetry and balance — seize this opportunity to infuse symmetry into your lighting design.

Wall sconces on each side of your bed, placed above your bedside table are a beautiful way to introduce low-level lighting. This arrangement not only looks chic but enhances the symmetry favoured in feng shui, striking balance within your room.

Feng Shui Bedroom Rules

Transcending beyond material prosperity, feng shui can help to create a path toward heightened happiness and a more enriched life.

The delicate balance of chi and yin energies, reinforced by a peaceful night's rest, paves the way for this sense of holistic wealth.

These ancient principles hold equal promise for the younger members of your family too. By incorporating feng shui into your children's rooms, you’ll infuse their lives with joy, vitality and positive energy, setting them on a path to success.
